What do you like most about your writing process?
What I like most about my writing process is finding a key point, usually a connection into my own interests, that’ll hook me into whatever topic it may be and then building the research around said topic. This often happens with argumentative papers, and it allows me to be creative with figuring how to persuade my audience into believing my points. However, this can lead to me becoming desperate and “grasping at straws” for supportive evidence and data, but overall, it is still very enjoyable.
What would you most like to improve about your writing?
Something I would like to improve about my writing is transitioning between the main thesis of papers and the research that supports the message of the paper. I often find it difficult to smoothly show progression of evidence of points, and instead find jarring cuts within the writing. Both of these aspects are important for writing, but I’d prefer it to be a cohesive and understandable collection of thoughts rather than confusing jumps around a paper.
How do you hope to grow as a writer?
I hope to grow as a writer by expanding my vocabulary and creating a writing style. I think that having a finite amount of words to write can become annoying for readers, and I often notice the same “safe” words or phrases used in my writing being repeated. Personally, it irks me and is redundant. More importantly, I hope to grow as a writer to where I develop my own style of writing. As someone who’s considering pursuing creative writing, I think that to find a style that both suits me professionally and personally would really help me as a writer. Although I am aware that writers for research or for companies usually do not hire employees to express their personal creativity, I still think that it’s an important skill to be able to develop stories clearly, even if for my own benefit.
